Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that posits our thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes significantly impact our behaviours and emotions. By recognising and modifying our cognitive, emotional, and behavioural patterns, CBT assists us in overcoming life's challenges. Negative thoughts are challenged, and positive ones are adopted, leading to healthier coping mechanisms, peace from all that negative mental chatter and an overall improvement in well-being.
CBT is a highly researched and effective form of therapy that is widely used to treat a variety of mental health conditions and lends itself well to parental well-being. From baby blues, postnatal depression, birth trauma, anxiety, intrusive thoughts and many more emotional experiences parents feel, it can be highly effective in reducing symptoms after just a few sessions.
One of the key components of CBT is the development of coping strategies that can be used in real-life situations. Through a process of cognitive restructuring, we learn to identify and challenge negative thought patterns, replacing them with positive, empowering ones. This can be especially helpful for those who struggle with anxiety, depression, overwhelm, stress, anger, rage and many many more. It helps us realise we are not our thoughts which brings a sense of control and harmony to our mental wellbeing.
CBT is a powerful tool for anyone looking to improve their mental health and well-being. Whether you are struggling with a specific mental health condition or simply looking to develop healthier coping mechanisms, CBT can help you to achieve your goals and live a happier, more fulfilling life.
The therapeutic practice of Hypnotherapy has often been misrepresented by the media and entertainment sources. These false misrepresentations have been put together purely for entertainment and money-making purposes.
In reality, hypnotherapy is a profoundly beneficial treatment that allows you to remain in control and fully conscious throughout. Similar to a pleasant daydream, you are guided into a relaxed state, quietening down the mental gossip of your conscious mind, the one that may tell you all those negative thoughts or create your stress or anxiety. By calming our inner gossip we can access the subconscious mind that influences 95% of our thoughts and actions and rid ourselves of negative thoughts, habits, traits and conditioning. Integrating Hypnotherapy into our CBT practice enables the subconscious to absorb positive techniques and tools more deeply and efficiently, helping you feel rejuvenated and able to accomplish your goals swiftly.
In the present day, modern hypnotherapy is widely recognised and utilised by medical professionals. The NHS, The British Medical Association (BMA), and the Department of Health (DoH) have officially acknowledged and incorporated hypnotherapy into their classifications. Now fully trained Hypnotherapists are governed by professional associations and bodies that demand each therapist complete the recognised training, adhere to codes of practice and are regularly checked to ensure they operate within the sphere of competence.
Despite the advancements in science and medicine, our brains are still somewhat mysterious. Scientists and medical experts now recognise this, and as society embraces more holistic and natural remedies for mental well-being, Hypnotherapy is gaining popularity. I have recently seen techniques used in Hypnotherapy, such as Visualisations gaining massive traction and success on social media platforms such as TikTok.
Hypnotherapy harnesses various naturally occurring psychological and physiological states in our brains. It utilises our imagination to help evoke positive emotions, practice behaviour changes, and directly influence emotions and behaviours for the better.
It promotes relaxation, and confidence and rids you of maladaptive coping strategies such as smoking, alcohol, gambling etc. It is used for pain management in dentistry and childbirth and reduces insomnia, brain fog and fatigue.
As a society, we have forgotten how powerful our body's internal healing system can be. Big pharmaceutical companies promote medication for all our needs and whilst I do not discount this, in today’s society, our nervous systems have never been more frazzled. Just like our iPhones, we are constantly switched on. We demand more from our mental state than ever before yet our mental state affects our physical state and if we do not practice relaxation techniques our physical state eventually malfunctions. It leads to digestive problems, skin disorders, muscle tension, migraines and blood pressure problems. By harnessing the powers of different relaxation practices, we have the power to give back to our bodies and restore or prevent physical health issues.
Hypnotherapy can remind us that we too have our inner apothecaries enabling us to heal organically and holistically on so many different levels.
Mindfulness signifies being fully present and attentive to our current actions, and thoughts. Although seemingly simple, this practice proves challenging as our minds tend to drift, causing us to detach from the present moment. Consequently, we become anxious and engrossed in negative thoughts concerning past and future events. Mindfulness allows us to train ourselves to not constantly operate in our conscious state, the negative chitter chatter in our minds, our toxic gossip.
Practising mindfulness allows us to mitigate stress levels there and then, improve brain and memory performance, gain deeper insight into our thoughts and emotions, and elevate our focus and compassion towards ourselves and others.
Practising Mindfulness regularly can reduce and rid feelings of stress, overwhelm, anxiety, anger, rage, guilt and many more tricky emotions.
Yes, when practised by a qualified professional, all are very safe. All therapies should be conducted by a licensed and certified therapist who has received the proper training, follows ethical guidelines and maintains a safe and supportive environment.
However when listening to your hypnotherapy audio recordings you should make sure it is safe for you to do so. You should not listen while driving or operating machinery. Please seek medical advice first if you suffer from epilepsy or any mental health illness before listening to these recordings.
CBH is regulated by professional bodies that oversee the protection of the public and the provision of practitioner credibility, training and services.
Professional bodies such as GHR and CNHC are some examples of professional bodies and ensure the therapist is credible.
Effective transformation through therapy hinges on your willingness to change. The internet is awash with self-help resources that promise radical change for the better. However, this seldom works as whilst it's not uncommon to be aware of an issue, struggling to comprehend why it persists at its core is where many people fall down in self-help resources. Working with a therapist can ensure the root aspects of your struggles are addressed and treated. Whilst self-help resources can educate, guide and support milder issues, it can be a bit like sticking a plaster over a deep wound, which needs further treatment to truly heal.
Collaborating with a therapist provides the necessary insight to understand personal issues and develop a tailored treatment plan. Each person reacts uniquely, so customised treatment plans work perfectly for your specific needs and desired outcomes.
Effective transformation through therapy hinges on your willingness to change. Therapy isn't like medical treatment, it's not like swallowing medication and awaiting the recovery.
Collaborating with a therapist provides the necessary insight to understand personal issues and develop a tailored treatment plan. Nonetheless, while a therapist can offer guidance and support, genuine progress ultimately depends on your level of motivation and commitment to achieving your goals. True healing necessitates a collaborative effort between your drive, a therapist's guidance, and patience as you navigate your wellness journey.
Each person reacts uniquely, so treatment plans are customised to meet your specific needs and align with your desired outcomes. I aim to guide you in understanding your concerns and developing the cognitive skills needed to empower yourself to take the necessary steps.
However, you must be motivated and committed to change and doing the work. During therapy, you will be given post-session tasks to reinforce new knowledge and cognitive techniques. Your commitment to these assignments is essential for positive results and advancement in your treatment and healing journey.
I admit, I thought this when I embarked on my journey with therapy. But it's an essential part of maintaining your overall well-being. Just as you wouldn't skip a haircut when your hair gets too long or neglect your nails when they need attention, you shouldn't overlook the importance of tending to your mental health. Therapy offers a safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings, gain new perspectives, and develop coping strategies for life's challenges. Carving out time for therapy is an act of self-love and respect, acknowledging that your mental health is as vital as your physical appearance. So, schedule that appointment and invest in yourself—you deserve it.
Before therapy, a bottle of wine and four vodkas every night was my therapy!! So, I started reducing what I was spending on this alcohol and putting it towards my therapy cost. I have NEVER looked back. Not only did I heal emotionally, but the physical results were incredible as well. The money was worth every penny.
Plus, by doing so you are imprinting and promoting a healthy well-being for your little ones who will carry this forth through their lives. What a gift!
While generic, free resources can be a good starting point, it's important to remember that each of us is unique. We have our distinct ways of thinking and handling challenging situations. Therefore, these resources barely scratch the surface of what we may need personally.
Emotional support requires a human connection. While free resources like articles, books, and videos can provide helpful information, they lack the empathy and understanding that only a real person can offer. It's important to have someone you trust to confide in, who can listen without judgment, has experience helping you navigate this phase and can offer support and guidance.
Your healing journey's success hinges on your ability to trust and open up to the therapist you choose to collaborate with. It's crucial to explore your options and select a therapist who creates a safe, supportive, and empathetic environment. Shop around and don't hesitate to communicate with therapists about your search for the right fit. A good therapist will respect and endorse your decision-making process, without pressuring you into a partnership that doesn't align with your needs.
I know first-hand how hard it can be to reach out and open up to a stranger. It's essential to listen to your intuition and choose what feels right for you. If you don't feel ready to pick up the phone, contact them through email or WhatsApp and explain that. A reputable therapist will go at your pace and your communication preference.
Best of luck and invest in yourself as you truly are worth it.
